Am I A “Yes” Girl? -Mary, the mother of Jesus

As Christmastime approaches, we are preparing the way for the celebration of the coming birth of our Savior. Tonight, I want to focus on Mary, the young mother of Jesus.

In Luke 1, the angel Gabriel came to Mary. Most people believe that Mary was only about thirteen or fourteen years old. When the angel tells the young teenager that she is going to have a baby, she asks, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” Gabriel tells her that the Holy Spirit would come to her and place the baby in her. He tells her “nothing is impossible with God” (Luke 1:37). Now Mary was engaged to a carpenter named Joseph. When word got out that she was pregnant, she would be in trouble. But still in verse 38 she answers, “I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

Wow.

Mary knows that once people find out she is pregnant, she would get humiliated, mocked, and possibly cast out of her family. Even though the trials would be hard and painful, she still submits to God and calls herself a servant of the Lord. She is allowing God to use her in any way He needs.

She said “yes”.

Despite of the consequences and hardships she would face, she selflessly chose to say “yes” to God, and thus, “no” to herself. Mary, a teenage girl, knew God had a plan set and when she was told part of that plan, she willing submitted, not caring what others thought.

Am I a “yes” girl? If God asked me, or told me to do something, would I say yes and submit willing or would I chose what was best for me at the moment? Do I want to be a “yes” girl?
