In the world today, most people say that they “love” something or someone. But do they really know what love truly is? The world thinks that love is “a passionate affection”.
And they could not be further than the truth.
John 15:13 says “Greater love has no man but this, than one who lays down his life for his friends.” Love requires willing sacrifice. When you truly love somebody, you are willing to do anything for them. Love is selfless.
One of the most detailed passages regarding love can be found in 1 Corinthians 13. (“The Proof of Your Love” by For King and Country- linked below)
“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it his not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.”
So this chapter says that love is patient, kind, selfless, and humble. It rejoices at the truth. Love will bear, believe, hope, and endure all things. Most importantly: LOVE WILL NEVER END.
While these four verses describe love, how do we know what is not love? Earlier in the chapter it says:
“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.”
These verses say that if we speak without love, we are a clanging symbol. They say that we are nothing without love.
So we know what love is and what it isn’t, but the question should still remain: WHAT IS LOVE?
1 John 4:8 says, “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
There’s your answer.
So while love is patient, kind, selfless, and so many other things, the most honest answer to what love is is to say that God is love.
The only way to have love, to be able to love, is through Love Himself- God. You must know God to know love because God is love.
The greatest display of love ever was Jesus on the cross. God in flesh gave Himself up as a sacrifice on our behalf- THAT’S LOVE!
Love is not buying someone chocolates on Valentine’s Day. Love is not holding the door open for someone who had their hands full. While those are kind actions, we can never feel the full extent of love on this earth except from our Heavenly Father.
God is the only one who loves us unconditionally. God is the only one who always understands. God is the only one who always loves.
Since God is love, the only way to experience true love is to know God. The only way we will ever see the truest love is on the cross.
